Book illustrated with a frontispiece, 128 animal plates (birds, reptiles, fish, insects, crustaceans, corals, portraits) including 11 finely coloured by hand. These colour plates are indeed exquisitely refined, with deep and vibrant colours. A fold-out map of the Jardin des Plantes. Numerous in text woodcut figures depicting animals.
Curmer specialised in high-end publishing, and we know that he went broke by commissioning the best engravings in England, the paper used, and he quickly went bankrupt. Hetzel purchased the stock.
The “jardin des plantes” is a superb publication that combines the interest of the subject-matter and discovery with the perfect execution of an exceptional book.
Apart from the flaws previously mentioned, this copy is in good condition.
