Belser Verlag, Stuttgart 1986.
With his Divine Comedy, the Florentine writer Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) succeeded in writing the most important poetry in Italian literature during his years in exile and at the same time he established the Italian language as a written language. Dante tells of his difficult journey through the three realms of the dead in the first person.
A total of almost 300 individual pen and ink drawings by Sandro Botticelli. Origin: between 1482 and 1490. Sandro Botticelli's unique series of paintings on Dante's Divine Comedy is a masterpiece of the Florentine Renaissance. Botticelli was dedicated to illustrating one of the most important and at the same time most difficult works of world literature.
To Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, created 200 years earlier, the artist created a series of paintings which, in its very own interpretation of the underlying text and the finding of a highly autonomous visual language, asserts itself as a congenial work of visual art.
