This extraordinary masterpiece comes from one of the most renowned illuminators of the time, Jean Poyet. He made the prayer book in 1492–95, a jewel of 15th century book illumination.
Anne de Bretagne intended her prayer book to be used to teach her son the basics of her faith. However, the king's son was only three years old when he died in 1495. The splendid last page of the little book shows him as an older boy, whom he was never to become, at prayer.
Anne de Bretagne's prayer book remained in France until 1905 when it was purchased by John Pierpont Morgan and taken to the USA, where it is guarded and preserved today in his famous library and museum.
