"One of the most important printed sources for the history of the Philippines. Aduarte, a Dominican, reached the Philippines in 1595 and soon became bishop. He compiled this history of the missions, especially noting the cruelty of the Spaniards who controlled the islands, the success of the missions and the lives of the martyrs in Japan. Following Aduarte, his collaborator Domnigo Gonazalez updated Part I for final publication. Most copies of the first edition of Part I printed in Manila at the University of Santo Thomas, 1640 were lost in a shipwreck en route to Spain. Part II was written by Baltasar de Santa Cruz; Part III by Vicente de Salazar and Part IV by Domingo Collantes; all at the Colegio de Santo Thomas. Cordier Japonica 351-353. Brunet I, 54; Medina, Manila 215, 315."
