Natural History - Quantity: 1 - Book

168 plates: 24 plates of the human race, including 5 portraits of Józef Antoni Poniatowski (one of Napoleon's most famous officers), Mlle Georges Veimer (the actress and Napoleon's mistress), the artist Feodor Ivanovich, whose portrait is auctioned at 550 euros and offered for sale at 850 euros, and 2 portraits of 2 African kings. 144 plates of the mammals are 4 plates drawn after life and 3 of them signed with the name of the artist (Brodtmann) (2 lion lithogaphs and 1 (Turki) of the 16 special breathtaking horse lithographs). Carl Joseph Brodtmann published various lithographic portraits of past and present personalities in Zurich between 1832 and 1835. Feodor Ivanovich was a celebrated artist in his time with an adventurous curriculum vitae. Abducted from the Russian steppes as a nomadic child and given away to German relatives by Tsarina Catherine the Great, he ended up as a page at the Baden Court. There they recognised his talent for drawing and sent him to the art academy. In 1806, Grand Duke Karl Friedrich appointed him court painter. F. Ivanovich does not seem to have been friends with everyone. Thus Goethe, who met him in 1815, wrote that Feodor Iwanowitsch Kalmück was a man gifted with many talents, but that he should go to the Natural History Cabinet and be stuffed. Original leather binding, there are 2 small tears(5-10 mm) in the spine. Everything can be seen in the photos. The book is hardcover and very sturdy!
