Mainline History: During the early 1980s the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) required additional electric locomotives. At the Leipzig 1982 spring fair, the VEB Lokomotivbau Electrotechnical Werke (LEW) “Hans Beimler” introduced the prototype locomotive 212 001-2. The locomotive soon got nicknamed the “Weiße Lady”, because of its white housing with red stripes. The locomotive was able to reach a maximum speed of 140 km/h. In 1983, a new bogie system with a modified ratio was applied, thus reducing the maximum speed to 120 km/h (series 243). The DR purchased 646 locomotives from this series between 1984 and 1990.
From January 1992, the locomotives were numbered as series 143, in accordance with the joint numbering scheme of the DR and DB
