Remarkable binding by Ginain, one of the best bookbinders of the romantic period. Formerly employed at Bozerian Jeune, he began his own business around 1820, he was active until about 1850. Charles Nodier said of him: “M. Ginain is one of those consummate artists to whom enthusiasts may entrust their most valuable books with an assurance that will never be deceived...” Notably, he worked for King Louis-Philippe and the Prince of Joinville.

Long-grained morocco half-binding with corners, spine with wide raised bands adorned with fine panelled decorative motifs. Mottled edges.

First edition. Reference book for monuments in Rouen, illustrated with 17 tipped-in plates drawn and engraved by Eustache-Hyacinthe Langlois. A sequel would be published 20 years later, in 1841.

A former merchant, member of the Académie and of the Société d'Emulation de Rouen, Monsieur de la Quérière showed himself to be a zealous and tasteful archaeologist, as well as a proper and warm writer. Due to the interesting and innovative research it contains, his work on the houses in Rouen, deserved the particular attention paid it by the people of Rouen. By revealing unknown treasures to them, he helped to save from imminent destruction several 15th to 17th century monuments.
