Remarkable publication in an oblong large quarto format, illustrated with 24 superb compositions drawn and lithographed by Albert Adam (1833-1900).
“Adam’s lithographs mainly depict the animals of the menagerie in the parks they occupied and which are embellished by rustic huts, many of which no longer exist. Some are of more real topographical interest...” (Denise, Bibliographie du Jardin des Plantes).
Copy preserved in its lovely publisher’s green percaline binding, the front cover is illustrated with a gilded plaque depicting the animals in their environment at the Jardin des Plantes. Titled in the centre with a crown of flowers surmounted by a peacock. Handwritten title label laminated to the spine. Blind-stamping in the centre of the back cover.
Sturdy volume, minor damage: headcap and edges of the boards rubbed from use. Gilding on the front cover is quite fresh. The plates inside are very clean, the sheets of text, in three columns, are browned and have foxing.
