Claudine à l'école was published in 1900, initially under the signature of Willy (Colette's husband). This novel in a new (for the time) natural style caused a real scandal. Claudine, 15 years old, lives in Montigny with her father, a distracted man who is more interested in molluscs than in his daughter's education. She attends the small village school, the main setting for the adventures described in this book, which is presented as the girl's intimate diary. Her daily life is marked by walks with her foster sister Claire, who tells her about her love life, the appearances of Dr. Dutertre, the school doctor who looks after Mlle. Sergent and who leers a little too closely at the older girls, and music lessons with Antonin Rabastens, who courts her. But events no less interesting enliven it: the school is in turmoil because of the arrival of the new teacher, Mlle Sergent, and her assistant, Mlle Aimée Lanthenay, and the boys' teachers, Messrs Duplessis and Rabastens. While Claudine befriends Mlle Aimée, Mlle Sergent makes it clear to the latter that she must not see Claudine any more, all the while granting her many favours. Claudine, feeling betrayed, makes life hard for the two women, whose displays of affection she finds repulsive, in the company of the great Anaïs and Marie Belhomme. Luce, Aimée's sister, arrives and Claudine first treats her badly before offering her her friendship. The year passes slowly, with the elementary school certificate on the horizon, which the girls are anxious to pass, and above all, the end-of-year party and the ball that will be given in honour of a minister who is visiting the town...

Claudine à Paris: Claudine and her father have left their village of Montigny to settle in Paris, where the young girl is recovering from an illness that cost her her beautiful long hair. When Claudine gets back on track, she writes in her diary about the exploits of her cat Fanchette, her explorations of the capital and, above all, her new encounters. She thus meets her aunt Coeur, her nephew Marcel, whom she quickly befriends, and the latter's young father, Renaud, who does not leave her indifferent.

Claudine en ménage: Claudine married Renaud and they moved in together. The latter leads a very social life. But the arrival of a young woman, Rézi, disrupts the couple's equilibrium. Attracted by Rézi, Claudine ends up having an affair with the young woman, while Renaud turns a blind eye to the adultery.

Claudine s'en va: Claudine fades away to make room for a new heroine, Annie. Annie, who is entirely submissive to her husband Alain, is upset when he leaves her in the hands of her sister Marthe, a free and willing woman. However, through contact with her, Claudine and other women of character, Annie begins to assert herself and to question her marriage and the man who until then had dictated her every move.
