Limited, numbered first edition in large format (number 13 / 150) of this successful book. Bound in the original cream-coloured cloth binding with gilt cover drawing - xv, 384 pp.

Condition: Good+. Binding very fine, spine hardly discoloured. Foxing on the endpapers. Several pages show foxing in the bottom margin, but the majority of the pages are without foxing. Binding is fine, paper otherwise clean and odourless, without marks. Top edge gilt. See pictures.

‘Caroline Lucie 'Lina' Duff-Gordon (1874-1964) was an English author and Italian correspondent for The Observer and The Sunday Times, who founded the British Institute of Florence. She later also became friendly with and took art tours with art historian Bernard Berenson. She married in 1902 to Aubrey Waterfield (1874-1944), professional painter.’

‘Welbore St. Clair Baddeley (1856-1945) was a poet, dramatist, world traveller, amateur archaeologist and historian. In Italy Baddeley came to know the prominent archaeologists Rodolfo Lanciani and Giacomo Boni.’
