Charles Eugène Henry Sayers.

"The Dutch East Indies painter Charles E.H. Sayers is one of the most important representatives of the art of the Dutch East Indies. His work typifies the quest characterizing painters of the Indies: no longer solely Western, but not completely of the East either. The art of the Dutch East Indies is considered to include paintings with the Dutch East Indies as the subject, and created between the 17th century and 1945. Most of these works were created in the Indies by Western painters, including many Dutch artists. Some, like Sayers, were born and bred there. Others spent some time in the Indies, attracted by exotic tales and a lust for adventure. Most of the painters, the so-called “mooi-Indië-schilders” (painters of the beautiful Indies), created idyllic scenes of the landscape and people. Sayers didn't paint what he saw, but what he felt deep inside. This is what makes him one of the great painters of the Indies." [Source: Galerie Metzemaekers].
