L’Histoire de Tom Jones, enfant trouvé (“The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling” in English) is a picaresque novel by Henry Fielding. Considered the first English novel of manners, Tom Jones is one of the major works of English literature. It is cited by Somerset Maugham in 1954, in his essay “Ten Novels and Their Authors” among the 10 greatest novels. (Wikipedia)

"In spite of the sentimentality which abounds, this dense novel possesses very appreciable qualities: a sense of narration, the accuracy of expression and lastly, some of the most delicious humour." (Dictionnaire des Oeuvres).
