Good copy. First edition of this monumental work, complete in 6 folio volumes, Catholic response to Diderot and Alembert’s encyclopedic project.
Fruit of long labour and great personal erudition on the part of the Dominican preacher, Charles Louis Richard and other Dominicans such as Giraud, Gérard, Hubert etc.
Printed by Jombert, Rollin and Bauche, opens with a preface, text in two columns. This volume 6 printed only by Jombert forms the supplement.
With his long dissertations at the end of the supplement volume, Richard seeks to combat the spirit of the Enlightenment and criticism of religion by appealing to controversy and rhetoric. In her study, Charles-Louis Richard ou la propagande involontaire, Nadine Vanwelkenjuyzen describes Richard as an “anti-philosopher” completely turned towards the defence of faith but who involuntarily promotes the rationalist approach of his adversaries, philosophers such as Pascal, Bossuet, Spinoza, Machaviel, Marc Aurèle and Bayle. Although it does not appear in this edition, the term “Sacred Library” would later be attached to the title and even placed before it so that it makes up the main title in the 1822 edition and in posterior bibliographies.
