Description
Raoul-Rochette / [König] - Lettres sur la Suisse écrites en 1819, 1920, 1921 - 1823
Bindings, Illustrated, Reference works, Travels - Quantity: 1

The best edition of this great classic on the Alps. First illustrated edition, it is the second for the text, which has been meticulously reviewed and corrected here. The third volume is in first edition (1826).

Esteemed for the superb aquatints after König and other famous landscape artists. Collated and complete: 26 plates, including the panoramic of the Alps in frontispiece and 4 costumes. (Switzerland, Rhine falls, Valais, Balme Cave, Pont St. Martin and Mt Blanc, return of the chamois to Grindelwald, Bernese baptism, costumes...).

Quality copy bound in luxury full glazed jade calfskin, spine with raised bands adorned with an elegant romantic design of gilded and blind-stamped tooling, boards stamped with a blind-stamped dentelle frame lined with a gilded roulette with a beautiful blind-stamped plaque in the centre. Marbled edges and endpapers.
Sound and highly decorative bindings, the leather has some some imperfections due to use, nothing serious. The interior in condition this good is rare, except for the paper of the first 15 signatures (pp 1 to 240) of volume 3 with some light foxing, the rest is pure and flawless. Some foxing on the tissue and in the margins of the frontispiece.

In his collections of letters written in 1819, 1820 and 1820, and 1824 and 1825 mainly addressed to his wife (the daughter of the sculptor, Houdon), and to Abel Rémusat, he speaks enthusiastically of the regions that he visited, mixing his descriptions with historical facts. He not only visited the cities but made many excursions to the mountains and focused on describing the views and glaciers. His travels took him to Neuchâtel, Fribourg, Bern, Thun, Lucerne, the canton of Ury, the Gotthard, Lausanne, Geneva, Sion, Zug, the Oberland, the upper Rhine Valley, the Appenzell, St. Gallen, Konstanz, Zürich, Basel, Chamonix the Simplon etc. Gorgeous book with beautiful illustrations.
