William H. Gilder - Ice Pack and Tundra - 1883
Arctic exploration and rescue mission - Quantity: 1

Ice Pack and Tundra. An Account of the Search for the Jeanette and a Sledge Journey through Siberia, by William H. Gilder, published by Scribner's Sons, New York, 1883.

First US edition: xii + 344pp + 4pp (advertisements). Pictorial blue cloth with a winter Arctic scene on the front cover, gilt title to front cover and spine. Numerous wood-engraved in-text illustrations, full-page plates, maps (one large fold-out, with colour).

Spine and back cover have a little staining, and cover and spine edges show some shelf-wear. The interior is very good, with only the slightest age-toning to page edges and a small closed tear to the upper edge of one page. A few handling marks and owner inscription to title page. The binding is tight and firm, illustrations bright and clean, no foxing or spotting. A very good copy of this rather scarce title.

The author joined the Jeanette Relief Expedition as a journalist between June 1881 and August 1882. The search ship, the U.S.S. Rodgers, caught fire at its winter quartering in St. Lawrence Bay but the search for the Jeanette survivors was continued by sledge to Lena Delta where the fate of De Long and others of the Jeanette's crew was determined.
