Charles Perrault / Gustave Doré - Les Contes de Perrault, dessins par Gustave Doré. Préface par P.-J. Stahl - 1862
Bindings, Children's books, Illustrated, Literature - Quantity: 1 - Book

First edition and first printing of the 41 famous woodcuts by Gustave Doré.

“The most beautiful of the illustrated editions of Perrault.”

“On the model of L’Enfer that Doré had wanted to be the most luxurious possible, “a very large book, very expensive, for little children,” published the following year in 1862. Forty out of text plates and a frontispiece illustrate Perrault’s nine tales. As evoked in the frontispiece, the publisher was anxious to promote reading as a family. His wish was granted: many generations of children have been marked by these black and white portraits with incomparable evocative power.” (See Bnf)

Kept in its binding by Engel adorned with beautiful plaques by Souze stamped in gold on the boards and the spine.

Tight volume, faded percaline, with significant restorations on the headcap, joints, edges and corners, the gilding is slightly faded on the boards, nice and bright on the spine. As if often the case, the interior has scattered foxing generally in the gutter of the plates. The paper on 5 plates is damaged on the border with restored tears that don’t affect the woodcuts.

In Perrault, Gustave Doré has “succeeded in giving the characters an
individual expression and has gotten rid of a certain uniformity in the physiognomy that is found
in some of the other books illustrated by the master. In addition, he was able, throughout,
to keep the necessary measure.” (Henri Leblanc). It was in 1862 by Hetzel that the most beautiful of the editions of
Perrault were published. This major publisher who published Jules Verne’s Voyages Extraordinaire among others
As well as Victor Hugo’s Châtiments, was also known by his pen name, P.-J. Stahl, with which
he prefaced this edition of Les Contes de Perrault. After an identical reissue in 1864,
Pierre-Jules Hetzel would publish a third printing in 1869.
