The V 200.1 (or Series BR 221) is a heavier version of the V200 and was built by the company Kraus-Maffei. The power output of the V 200.1 was 1350 hp, whilst the older V 200.0 was fitted with motors with an output of 1100 hp, which was insufficient power for hauling the heavier and longer trains.
These locomotives were used for both freight and passenger transport. The running numbers of the Series V200.1 were renumbered in 1968 to reflect the Series BR 221 running numbers. Running numbers V200 101 - 150 were renumbered to BR 221, 101 - 150. These locomotives achieved a maximum speed of 140 km/h. These locomotives were manufactured during the period 1962-1965. A total of 50 locomotives of the Series BR V200.1/BR221 were built. The last locomotive of the Series V 200.1/BR221 was decommissioned by the DB in 1988.
