Louis Moréri; Pierre Bayle - Le Grand dictionnaire historique...Histoire sacrée et profane... Empereurs, Rois, Genealogie - 1698
Bindings, Biography, Illustrated, Reference works - Quantity: 4 - Book

Fresh copy of this major work, the jewel of all scholarly libraries. This copy is the important 8th edition from 1698, complete in 4 folio volumes. It is partly first edition since “a quantity of articles and important remarks not found in the previous 7” have been added. In addition, it has the particularity of including the Supplement published in 1689. The editors have also “corrected the censored errors in Bayle’s Dictionnaire Critique and many others.”
It is illustrated with an engraved title and some intaglio vignettes (banners and dropcaps). The 1st edition, the only one that was published during the author’s lifetime, was published in Lyon in 1674.

"The literary wealth of this dictionary is not only attested by the twenty-one editions published between 1674 and 1759, but also by the great success it met with over two centuries: Victor Hugo frequently used it for the historical details in his novels. The Moréri Dictionary is still useful today as the first repertory of biographical notes, especially regarding the European history and thought of the 16th century.

"Its major challenge was to adopt an encyclopaedic point of view in dealing with topics as diverse as history, geography, genealogy and religion."

Le Grand Dictionnaire historique, ou Le mélange curieux de l'histoire sacrée et profane, was first printed in Lyon in 1674 in a single volume It contains mainly historical and biographical articles. Moréri dedicated it to Gaillard de Longjumeau, bishop of Apt, where he was appointed chaplain. To simplicity, it can be said that this was the first major French dictionary of proper nouns.

This encyclopaedia, which was particularly rich in geographical and historical terms, created an immediate craze throughout Europe, and this success lasted for most of the century following its publication, leading to numerous reprints.

Always published in folio format, it initially consisted of a single volume, but the number of pages increased, with, for example, two volumes (separated or not, depending on the copy, into two volumes each) in 1683 for the third edition. It continued to be developed after Moréri's death, with additions about contemporary events and biographies. A total of 20 editions were published between 1674 and 1759, the last of which was published in Paris and consisted of 10 volumes.

His dictionary was translated into the German, the English, the Dutch, the Spanish and the Italian. This books would inspire a series of similar dictionaries, written in the vernacular and not in Latin, in Germany as well as in England. (Source: Wikipedia)
