On June 5, 1975, a young man entered Abbey Road Studios in London. Packed with a plastic bag, he stood indifferently near the mixing desk and stared at the scenery. He did not say anything. Its external appearance was inconspicuous to terrifying. Pale, overweight, shaved head and eyebrows. None of the people present took notice of him. Pink Floyd worked on the final mix of sounds for their upcoming album "Wish You Were Here". The included song "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" received its final polish. Bassist Roger Waters did not notice the visitor. Keyboardist Richard Wright and singer David Gilmour thought it was an acquaintance of the sound engineers or the record label. Drummer Nick Mason also took no part in the scenery.

Suddenly it hit Gilmour and he suddenly finished his work. He shouted something to Mason, which made tears well up in his eyes. Suddenly the moment froze to death. The visitor listlessly listened to the soundtracks of the song without understanding what the song was about. Someone present came up to him and asked him what about him and what did he think of the music? He has a refrigerator in his kitchen that has a lot of pork in it. He said nothing about the music. A few more incoherent words were uttered, he brushed his teeth and disappeared. Without saying goodbye. No one from Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett ever saw again. The founding member and original singer of the band died lonely and withdrawn on July 7th, 2006 in Cambridge.

The concept started for design team Hipgnosis, as it often did, with close examination of the music. “We just sit in a very ordinary room, listen to Floyd music, and talk,” Hipgnosis co-founder Storm Thorgerson explained in his 1997 book, “Mind Over Matter: The Images of Pink Floyd.”

“We discuss what the music feels like to us. Or the intention of the lyrics. Or what the album may really be about, even if the Floyd haven’t said it, or don’t yet know it.”

“‘Wish You Were Here’ was a different story altogether,” he added. “Lengthy discussions, particularly with the band, much internal focusing, and repeated exposure to the haunting brilliance of ‘Shine on You Crazy Diamond’ led inexorably to one point, led to one theme, in fact to the one word, ‘absence.'”

The Rest a great great Cover :

The team devised a concept for the cover involving two men — record execs fashioned in a style suggested by the album’s “Have a Cigar” — shaking hands to seal some unknown deal. Hipgnosis explained a handshake is often seen as an empty gesture, void of meaning or purpose. And the flames? A visualization of people’s tendency to remain emotionally withdrawn (or absent) for fear of “being burned.”
