Front: a weeping woman (the image of The Netherlands), who places a laurel wreath on Van Speyk's tomb (which did not exist in reality at the time of manufacture of this token), while she holds a reversed torch with her left hand. The tomb in Greek style depicts the explosion of the gunboat, with the crowned coat of arms of The Netherlands resting against the tombstone.

Commander Van Speyk became famous by detonating his ship in order to prevent that the Belgians would capture the flag. His last words were: 'And become an infamous Brabant man? I would rather explode!'.
