Period tortoiseshell patterned calfskin binding, rubbed corners and joints,
covers and caps in good condition, marbled edges, adorned ribbed spine,
red morocco title label, sound binding and well-holding
text block, inside fresh, text in good condition, minute spots of foxing.

Illustrated with 40 in text engravings, engraved in intaglio
by Romain de Hooge, an accomplished and prolific Dutch engraver and
caricaturist.
A frontispiece is most likely missing.

"Contes et Nouvelles en vers par Monsieur de La Fontaine" is a collection
of various tales and raunchy short stories, assembled and versified by Jean de La Fontaine.
To write them, he was inspired by several French and Italian works from the 15th
and 16th centuries, including Giovanni Boccae's Decameron,
Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando Furioso, the collection "Cent Nouvelles d'Antoine de la Sale et l'oeuvre
de Bonaventure Des Périers".
