In 1963, the DB ordered Krupp AG to develop a V-160 variant with electric train heating, which would bear the type designation V 162. Krupp then delivered the two prototypes V 162 001 and V 162 002 in 1965, which were reinforced in 1966 by the third prototype V 162 003.
The three locomotives had a 16-cylinder 16V652 TB10 engine built by MTU rated at 1,427 kilowatts (1,940 hp). Main engine power must be fully available for traction. Since Krupp did not have a more powerful engine for the V 162 in the mid-1960s, an auxiliary engine had to be built in to run the heating generator for the electric train heating. This in turn required a longer locomotive body than the V 160 with a total length over buffers of 16.4 metres.
