An undated edition, preserved in a superb brick-coloured paperboard binding called "aux deux bouquets de roses", produced between 1865 and 1874. The first edition of this novel by Jules Verne, illustrated by Riou, was published in 1867. Probable original edition.
The decoration on the front cover features a gilded bouquet of roses at the top and bottom. The title and author's name appear in the centre. The rest of the design is made up of interlaced and gilded ivy leaves. The frame of the cover bears -sometimes- a gilded Greek motif and a dentelle of leaves.
Binding by Magnier.
A lovely front cover, fresh. Rubbed corners and caps. Clean spine. The back cover is in excellent condition. Sound hinge. Yellowed leaves, very rare foxing. In very good condition.
One of the legendary titles by Jules Verne, particularly used in films. This science fiction novel, in which the protagonists travel to the centre of the earth through an extinct Icelandic volcano by deciphering runes, reflects the contemporary enthusiasm for three young and growing sciences: cryptology, palaeontology and geology.
