Diesel locomotive Series BR 223 / Siemens ER20.
The Siemens Series BR ER20 (Euro Runner) are diesel-electric locomotives built by Siemens Transportation Systems and are deployed for both freight and passenger cervices on the non-electrified routes. The locomotives were built on commission from the Österreichischen Federal Railways (ÖBB), where they are known under the nickname "Hercules" and were then re-classified as the Series Rh 2016.
Development and deployment.
The Siemens ER20 locomotives for the Euro Runner Series are Siemens-built 4-axled diesel-electric locomotives with a power of 2000 kW, built on behalf of the ÖBB and classified in Austria as Rh 2016. The ÖBB has taken delivery of 100 units of these locomotives. In Germany, the locomotive was classified as a Series BR 253, but is now re-classified as the Series BR 223. There are 2 versions, the BU and the BF, where the BF variant is not fitted with the heater system for passenger carriages and is only used for the freight trains. The Rh 2016 is equipped with a 16-cylinder diesel engine from MTU of Friedrichshafen. In Austria the locomotives are deployed with the ÖBB, the Steiermärkische Landesbahnen, LTE Logistics, RTS and Stern & Hafferl. In Germany these locomotives are in use with various private railway companies. In Belgium the firm Alpha Trains also owns 12 of these locomotives which are leased from them by the Vogtlandbahn.
