Mainline history: Because the transport of mail in passenger trains regularly caused delays with the need to load and unload, it was decided during the 1950s to separate mail traffic from passenger traffic as much as possible. At first, a number of electric railcars of type Mat '24 (Blokkendoos) were converted into mail railcars as the series mP 9200. From then onwards mail could be transported independently from passenger trains. Between 1956 and 1960, a total of 25 Blokkendoos-railcars were converted into motorised postal carriages.
In the 1960s, the PTT purchased 35 dedicated postal transport railcars of the Series mP3000 that were designed specifically for postal services and replaced the ‘Blokkendoos’ variants. The new motorised postal train units were derived from the Mat’64 train unit and were built by the company “Werkspoor”.
