‘Pol Mara, pseudonym of Louis Leysen (1920-1998), was a Belgian painter, illustrator and lithographer. His work is known all over the world. (...) At the beginning of his career, he worked as a surrealist painter before moving on to lyrical abstraction in the 1950s. (...) In the 1960s, Pol Mara introduced photorealistic elements into his work, linking up with the emerging mass communication by weaving into his works elements from the world of television, film and illustrated magazines. In doing so, he ventured into the realm of pop art, following in the footsteps of Robert Rauschenberg. Pol Mara painted a dream world, in which beautiful young women appear, often in light-coloured undergarments. (...) He has lived in Gordes in the Provence, France since 1972, partly for health reasons. There, the Pol Mara Museum is located in the castle of Gordes, where 200 works by Pol Mara are permanently on display. (Source: Wikipedia).
