Henricus Zacharias Alexander (Alex) Gutteling (Bondowoso, Java, September 3, 1884 - Driebergen, November 12, 1910) was a Dutch poet and critic.
Gutteling debuted in 1906 with A youth of love. His collection Glowing Clouds was published posthumously in 1911. Gutteling's translation of Paradise Lost by the English poet John Milton was also published posthumously in 1912.
Gutteling studied law in Amsterdam, but interrupted his studies due to illness (tuberculosis). Together with Maurits Uyldert, he was regarded as the most loyal follower of Albert Verwey. From its foundation in 1905, he contributed to Verwey's magazine De Beweging with poems, reviews and essays.
His poetry is symbolistic in the sense that the phenomena from reality, however trivial and simple (as in The Carpet Beater), are used in Gutteling's verses to represent the Idea of a higher unity or to show the interweaving of higher and lower. see.
