Original leaf from a book of hours, manuscript on parchment. Written and illuminated in France, around 1440.
The decorations are heightened with real gold leaf that is still intact after 570 years and sparkles in the light. The leaf is as new.
On recto the text starts with the small initial G, Gloria patri: “In the name of the father the son and the holy spirit.” The large initial at the bottom of the leaf shows a thin twig with golden leaves and a red and blue flower.
On verso twigs sprout from the initial Q. On that line, in red, is the word hymn.
Each initial is gilt-heightened, painted against a red and blue background and coloured with white strokes. There are two two-line initials.
Written in black pen in 15 lines. There are 5 beautifully decorated line fillers.
The leaf is in very good condition, there is a small stain in the bottom margin. The leaf has once been moist in the margin, so it is slightly corrugated.
Leaf size: 13 × 10.2 cm, type area: 8.2 × 5.5 cm.
The leaf is in a passe-partout that is open on both sides and comes in an acid-free Melinex sleeve for better storage.
