A very early Statenbijbel from 1641. This folio Statenbijbel was published by Theunis Jacobsz., Jan Frederiksz. Stam, Everhardt Cloppenburg and Otto Barentsz. Smient. It was the first Amsterdam edition with the consent of the city council of Amsterdam (Poortman, ‘Bijbel en prent’ 1, p.153)
In 1641 Theunis Jacobsz (Lootsman), Jan Frederiksz Stam, Everhard Cloppenburgh and Otto Barendsz Smient published their own Amsterdam Statenbijbel. In the preface they solemnly declare that their bible is word for word identical to the Leiden bible, in the text, the notes and the parallel places. (dbnl.org)
Restored original Bible in full-leather binding on wooden boards with brass clasps, central ornament and corners. Bookblock on five raised bands. Contains the Old Testament, New Testament and Apocrypha.
Condition: good - Title page in copy pasted on endpaper. Pages in some places moisture-stained, frayed, or with wormholes. The book ends with 3 Maccabees 6:32; the remaining text pages are missing.
The pictures provide a good impression of the condition and are part of the description.
This early edition of the Statenbijbel does not contain any plates. The Synod of Dordrecht found it unnecessary, in view of the education of the people, to illustrate the Statenbijbel . This edition is also without maps, and they have never been included.
