First French edition of this classic zoology work published in 1743 in London entitled: " An attempt towards a natural history of the polype " .

Illustrated with 22 intaglio engravings.

An important work that describes in detail the peculiarities of the Hydra Viridis, a tiny freshwater polyp defined by the author as an insect, previously studied by Leuwenhoek ( 1703) & Tremblay (1739); the study is the result of meticulous microscopic analyses, illustrated in the 22 tipped-in plates.

Henry Baker (1698-1774) naturalist and scholar, member of the Royal Society, is best known for introducing and widely spreading the use of the microscope, especially within the study of biology. Author of The Microscope made Easy 1743, Employment for the Microscope 1753 (translated to the French by Father Esprit Pezenas (1692-1776) in 1754. Inventor of a system to instruct the deaf and dumb, a system that ensured him a comfortable income. This attracted the attention of Daniel Defoe whose younger sister, Sophia, would marry Baker in 1729.

Well-made contemporary binding in glazed and marbled tan calfskin, smooth spine, adorned with a mosaic red morocco label and a rich decoration of small gilded tooling.
Apart from a few minor defects due to handling, copy in excellent condition. Impeccable inside.
Provenance: Auguste Midy de La Grainerais (1747-1789) with his heraldic ex-libris intaglio engraved.
