Mainline history: The steam locomotives of the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) Building Series 4000, better known as "Big Boy", are one of the largest and most powerful steam locomotives in the world. The locomotives were mainly used for pulling freight trains across the Rocky Mountains. The locomotives have a wheel arrangement (2'D)D2' (Whyte-Notation: 4-8-8-4) and are able to reach a maximum speed of 130 km/h. The "Big Boy" locomotives were deployed in the period 1941-1957 for the pulling of freight trains. In 1959 the last locomotive of this series was put aside. Up to 1962 4 locomotives were kept in business as a reserve.
