Exceptional binding for a photo album, wooden boards painted in gold, red and black lacquered with carved and painted ivory inlays.
Hand-painted Nihonga style silk interior, the first composition depicts a young woman in traditional dress, Mount Fuji in the background. A total of 10 painted duos showing landscapes with flowers and birds. Remarkable, high-quality achievement.
Western binding with leather spine, the pages for the photos are cardstock and have one or several openings in the back and the front bordered with blue silk.
Most likely a Japanese creation from around 1880 for the increasingly numerous foreign clientele mainly in Tokyo after the reopening of Japan in the mid-19th century during the Meiji era.
Dimensions: 27 x 22 cm
