All works were written after Cats had withdrawn from public life at his country estate Zorgvliet, located between The Hague and Scheveningen. ‘Buytenleven op Zorgvliet’ appeared in 1655 as part of the first edition of ‘Alle de wercken’. A year later the first separate edition followed, after which it was reprinted many times, just like the other works of Cats. It consists for the most part of court poems, a genre popular in the Netherlands until the end of the eighteenth century, from which people could learn how to live simply and virtuously outside the city.
