Britsche Balladen. Dutch translation/adaptation by A. Verwey of ‘Some British Ballads’, illustrations by Arthur Rackham, published by Van Holkema & Warendorf, Amsterdam, 1920. 199 pp. with 16 tissue-guarded, tipped-in colour plates (one of which is laid down on the front cover instead of in the text) and numerous b/w vignettes, all by Rackham.
Limited Dutch edition of 550 copies, this being no. 69 (in the Deluxe edition, a smaller part of the 550 copies).
Finely bound by Elias P. van Bommel of Amsterdam in contemporary full calf, with gilt decoration and titles to spine, elaborate decoration in gilt and black and colour plate of May Colven pasted down to front cover, blind-stamped decoration to rear cover, top edge gilt, gilt dentelles along inner cover edges, marbled end papers. Ex-libris N. de Haan to half-title page.
Some scuffing to cover edges, slight age-toning to pages, and the tissue-guard facing page 104 has been removed. Otherwise an excellent copy.
