In her foreword Mrs. Dufrénoy writes “Les ruses de la diplomatie pourront retarder le grand jour de l’affranchissement entier de la Grèce : elles ne l'empêcheront point d'arriver”.

Indeed, in 1830 the Greeks, finally supported by the great powers, managed to have their independence recognised by the Ottoman Empire and to create the Greek state on February 3, 1830.

Period binding full flamed glazed veal. Smooth back decorated with two pieces of mosaic green leather and an elegant romantic décor with golden tooling, framing lace on the dishes, in the center of the first the beautiful iron of “Université de France - Gollège Royal de Bourbon”. Golden roulettes on the inner corners, edges and marbled guards.

Beautiful copy, back a little worn, the head cap of volume 2 a little shaved, rubbing on the joints and inner corners, 3 corners a little pierced. Fresh interior, foxing on some notebooks.

BIOGRAPHY & THEME: Adélaïde-Gillette Dufrénoy, born Billet in Nantes2, parish of Saint-Barthélémy on December 3, 1765 and died in Paris on March 7 or 8, 1825, was a French poet. (wikipedia).

Author of erotic poems that she veils with the name of elegiac poems. It was in 1806 that the first edition of his Elegies appeared, which was a great success.
In 1811 and 1812 she sang the King of Rome, and in 1813 she was part of the suite that accompanied Empress Marie-Louise to Cherbourg.
The fall of the Empire having once again disturbed his affairs, his pen again became a resource. She writes books for children and youth, directs La Minerve littéraire, L'Almanach des Dames and L'Hommage aux Demoiselles. She saw some of her plays crowned by various academies and in 1814 she won the Prix de l'Académie française for Bayard's poem Derniers moments.
She was sought after by the most distinguished people of the time, particularly Jean-Pierre Louis de Fontanes, whom she welcomed in Sevran, Amable Tastu, Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, Tissot, Abbé Sicard and Béranger. She also provided translations from English, some novels and books for girls' education.
