Second edition of the Works of Jean-Baptiste-Louis Gresset, augmented (on the Geneva premiere in 1744) by the critique of Vert-Vert, a poem considered to be the author's masterpiece. (Quérard 470 - Cioranesco 32231)
"Jean-Baptiste Rousseau calls this poem a 'literary phenomenon', both for time and talent."
This edition opens with a beautiful frontispiece engraved by Scotin.
Our copy contains three parts out of the four that it should normally include. Lack: the third part as well as the review of Vert-Vert which constituted the supplement. Each part has its own title page printed in red and black.
Period binding, marbled havana calfskin, ornate ribbed spine, red morocco piece and gilt fleurons in boxes. Red slices. Upper cover uncovered, friction from use. Interior in good condition, no foxing. A small angular lack on the last page of the book with slight overflow on the text on the back (see photos).
