Gio Ponti - Rima - Desk

Gio Ponti - Rima - Desk

Giovanni Ponti was one of the most important Italian architects and designers of the post-war period.
It is difficult to summarize his career and his works.

RIMA, the historic metal furniture industry in Padua, whose activity covers a period of sixty years. Born from a small artisan reality, Rima has earned, step by step, an eminent position among the industries that have contributed to defining the idea of Italian interiors, starting after the war. Leading name in the early 1950s, the company quickly gained visibility: for the quality of products in line with the new aesthetic language, and thanks to the support that comes from leading names in the design field. Gio Ponti, Alberto Rosselli, Campo and Graffi, Franco Albini ... These are all figures who frequented the Rima technical office and who, on some occasions, gave life, through close collaborations, to specific models produced by the Padua-based company.

The desk presented in this auction was designed by Giò Ponti for the Torre Pirelli Milan skyscraper. Rima production, 1960.
Publications; Ponti, Fornaroli, Rosselli, Valtolina, Dell'Orto, The interiors, in "Edilizia Moderna", n. 71, December 1960, p. 84;

The design of this desk radically changes the design of office furniture. Indeed, Giò Ponti writes about the furnishings designed for the Pirelli Tower: "Do you remember the steel furniture? American desks swollen like American cars ... Do you remember the metal office chairs with sections as if they were wood? Maybe mine research through the Rima desk was worth something. "

The lot at auction consists of the rare model of presidential desk (dedicated to executives), made entirely of noble Mansonia walnut and complete with 2 drawers.
The desk is in very good condition. The desk has been restored in a conservative way keeping the original patina. There are slight signs of aging.

Valuable construction details: the structure is equipped with positioning adjusters on the feet to compensate for any disconnection of the floor and always have a stable support of the four feet on the ground.
If desired, the desk is also built to be equipped with only one of the drawers positioned at will on the right or left. In fact, it is sufficient to remove two bolts to disassemble one of the drawers.
The keys to lock the drawers are missing
