[Charles IX] - Déclaration [...] du Roi sur l'Édit de pacification des troubles pour le fait de la religion - 1563
Extremely rare booklet published on December 20, 1563 containing the original edition of the declaration of the peace treaty signed in Amboise on March 19, 1563 by King Charles IX ending the religious war between the Prince of Condé, leader of the Protestants, and Anne de Montmorency, head of the Catholic army.
The edict of Amboise grants amnesty to the supporters of the Prince of Condé (Protestants):
"That all the gentlemen, barons, squires, high vigilantes and lords holding full fief of Hautbert, will be able, to live in their houses, which they will live, in freedom of conscience and the exercise of their religion" (A4r sheet).
However, it restricts the exercise of Protestant worship outside the towns and on the lands of certain lords.
The Edict of Amboise is one of the many edicts of pacification with the Protestants, which punctuated the period 1562-1598, this last year being that of the Edict of Nantes, the final text of a long series which, in the second half of the sixteenth century, punctuated the wars of religion. All the texts which legislated on the status of the Reformed, including that of Amboise, have the particularity of not having lasted long unlike that of Nantes which lasted nearly a century.
In fact, this peace was not very durable, since the clashes resumed four years later.
Modern half vellum, title piece glued to the back. In excellent condition.
