Voyage au bout de la nuit is Céline's first novel, published in 1932. With this book, the author obtains the Renaudot Prize, missing the Goncourt Prize by two votes. It is a work that has become a classic of the twentieth century, translated into 37 languages.

The novel is particularly famous for its style, imitated from the spoken language and tinged with slang, which has largely influenced contemporary French literature. It is mainly inspired by Celine's personal experience through her main character Ferdinand Bardamu, the author's literary double.
