Description
Jean Esquirol - Des Maladies Mentales considérées sous les Rapports Médical, Hygiénique et Médico-légal - 1838
Medicine - Quantity: 3 - tipped in plates - Book

Two octavo volumes of text (20 x 13 cm): XVIII and 678 pp. and 2 leaves and 864 pp.

One atlas volume (23 x 16 cm): 4 + 27 plates, including a folding map of the of the Royal House of Charenton.

Atlas volume includes 26 engravings of various mental patients by Ambroise Tardieu, and a folding plan of the grounds and building of the asylum at Charenton.

The importance of this wonderful study is well known. It's really the first modern work of psychiatry. After an official inspection mission of the insane hospitals, Esquirol succeeded Pinel as chief physician at the Salpêtrière hospital in 1810, where he initiated, in 1817, the first teaching on mental illnesses. From 1825 to 1834, he managed the House of Charenton. He inspired the law of 1838 and, by defining clinical signs of mental illnesses, avoided the scaffold for delinquent lunatics.

'Des maladies mentales' served as a basic text in psychiatry for over fifty years (as noted in 'Heirs of Hippocrates'). The stunning plates by artist and mapmaker Ambroise Tardieu, which movingly illustrate varieties of depression, mania, schizophrenia, cretinism, etc. form what Norman has described as ,the first important iconography of the insane'.

What makes this copy especially pleasant is that the plates have been bound separately and in a matching leather-and-boards binding (probably later).

The condition is far better than usual. There is some rubbing to extremities; scattered foxing; atlas volume with corner bumps, and occasional foxing. (The title pages are always affected as here). Overall a lovely and lovely-looking set!
