Introduced in January 1979, the Ferrari 312 T4 initially had the most unlikely and disrespectful nicknames. At first it was "the slipper", then "the hippopotamus" or "the duck": all to underline its not-so-graceful aesthetic in no uncertain terms.
It was Enzo Ferrari who silenced everyone by saying that a car “is beautiful when it wins” and that not only did it win but with its drivers became a legend.
The 312 T4 made its debut in South Africa, the third race of the year, thus taking part in 13 of the 15 Grands Prix scheduled for that season.
Apparently ungainly and not very elegant, this single-seater however guaranteed excellent reliability for Jody Scheckter and Gilles Villeneuve.
