Aboca Museum presents the facsimilar reproduction of the fascinating florilege "Hortus amoenissimus" by Franciscus De Geest, famous Dutch painter of the seventeenth century Baroque (1638-1699), who became famous for portraits and still lifes, dedicated himself to the illustration of flowering plants, creating this splendid handwritten florilegium, dated Leeuwarden 1668, currently preserved at the National Library of Rome. A collection of 201 original life drawings, beautifully colored with mixed media, testimony to the variety of flowering plants cultivated in the botanical gardens of the time and to the rich collections of refined oriental tulips. The vertically oblong folio measures 447 x 283 mm.

The florilege is introduced by a suggestive presentation table: the artist offers his book to Flora, goddess of Spring. The facsimile reproduction is accompanied by a commentary of about 100 pages in English containing: presentation of the figure of the author; description of the seventeenth-century iconography of plants; identification, in a modern key, of the species present in the florilegium.

The tulip chosen as an illustration for the box is the Semper Augustus, the most precious variety among those painted by Franciscus de Geest: it was so sought after that three of its bulbs could be worth 30,000 florins, almost the price of a canal house in Amsterdam!
