First published in 1672, De anima brutorum, is an extensive physiological and psychological investigation of the nervous system and the brain. It includes the first medical description of general paralysis, a chapter on depression, mania, stupidity, and perhaps the first research on the role of sleep in the human nervous system.
The second work, divided into two parts, bears the subtitle "diatriba de medicamentorum operationibus in humano corpore". There are chapters on opiates, arrhythmias, and many other conditions, including diabetes (Willis is responsible for calling diabetes "mellitus," because of the sweet taste of diabetic urine).
