Famiano Strada - De Bello Belgico - 1632
History, Illustrated - Quantity: 2 - Book

Very rare first edition in folio of these valuable volumes dating back to 1632/1647, composed respectively of pages 364 and 480 and containing 11 and 18 etchings (out of 19), most of them in double page, engraved by great masters such as Baur, Giminiani and Wiele . The two title pages are engraved with a large map of the Netherlands in the shape of a lion (BELGIAN LEO). Good state of conservation: small lacks in the back of the two volumes, slight undulation of the pages inside and some flowering. Overall excellent inking quality of the boards.
Strada joined the Society of Jesus in 1591, and for fifteen years he taught eloquence in the Roman College, becoming the most authoritative officiant of early 17th century Roman rhetoric.
Rather than the desire to give concrete form to his orientation of thought, Strada, in composing the historical work De bello belgico decades duae, obeyed the invitation of Duke Alessandro Farnese of Parma. The narration of the revolts and wars of Flanders from 1555 to 1590 is skilful, written in moderation and without violent controversy. Numerous courtly references to the Farnese, however compensated by the use of documentary material from those archives. Lo Strada moves away from the common imitators of Livio for a more modern and lively Latin style. Strada's work achieved considerable diffusion and was translated into the main European languages.
