Steam locomotive Series BR 45.
The locomotives of the Series BR 45 were the most powerful steam locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn and were used for heavy goods transport.
Development and deployment.
The locomotives of the Series BR 45 were built by the firm Henschel. In 1936-1937 the first 2 locomotives of the Series were built and were delivered in 1937. They were stationed at the Mannheim depot. The remaining 26 were delivered in 1940 and were stationed in the Würzburg depot. An additional order of 103 locomotives was made in 1941, but the order was withdrawn in the same year because they opted for the Krieg or wartime locomotives that could be built quicker.
In May 1945, only three locomotives were still operational. The rest were inoperable due to faulty boilers and also war damage in the Western occupied zones.
After the Second World War it turned out that the locomotives suffered from damage to the boilers, that resulted in reduced boiler pressure from 20 bars to 16 bars. In 1950, a number of these locomotives were given a new boiler. The locomotives numbered 45 010, 45 016, 45 019, 45 021 and 45 023 were upgraded. The Deutsche Reichsbahn (GDR) also tried to remedy the high pressure problem with the boiler and also modified locomotive 45 024. This modification proved unsuccessful and the locomotive was decommissioned in 1959.
In 1968 only 3 locomotives were still in use. These were locomotives numbered 45 010, 45 019 and 45 023. These locomotives were also decommissioned in that year.
