Diesel locomotive V200.0 / Baureihe 220.
In the 1950s the newly established Deutsche Bundesbahn was eagerly looking for new locomotive power to replace the steam locomotives with their cumbersome operation and associated high costs. For the first rate express train services they immediately considered the use of powerful locomotives already fitted with diesel engines. At the time the DB’s decision was based upon existing knowledge of multiple facets of the industry, as listed below, and then combining these and developing a diesel locomotive for high-quality express train services.
The DB already had substantial experience with diesel locomotives such as the smaller and medium duty diesel locomotives, the V60.
Their existing experience in the field of propulsion technology with heavy vehicles with drive-shafts.
This was with Daimler-Benz, MAN and Maybach. They then in cooperation with the Bundesbahn-Zentralamt in Munich, opted for a new 12-cylinder motor with a power output of 1100 HP.
In addition, Maybach and Voith were working on a new fluid transmission system for use with diesel motors.
Development and deployment.
On the basis of the above - Krauss-Maffei together with the participation of most West German locomotive building firms then developed the successful V 200.0 locomotive. Its two engines together provided 2200 HP with a Gross tonnage of ‘only’ 78 tons. We say ‘only’ 78 tons because a steam locomotive with tender with a comparative power output would have tipped the scales at 160 tons. In 1953, the first locomotive, the V200 001, was exhibited at the Verkehsrausstelling in Munich. Its attractive styling made a favourable impression on the public. This was in contrast to the somewhat clumsy design of the prototype of the E10 that was built at the same time. The exceptional reliability and suitability of this 1950s locomotive has been proven as, after more than half a century after their purchase, several units are still in service overseas and also with private railway operators. The Swiss AM 4/4's are V200.0 locomotives that were taken over from the DB, and were manufactured in the factories of Krauss-Maffei and MaK. A total of 86 were built with an initial series of 5 units. In October 1986 the Swiss SBB-CFF-FFS bought seven V 200.0 's that were no longer deployed with the DB (the last Series V200 of the DB had already been decommissioned in 1984). The Am 4/4 had a top speed of 140 km/h.
