The Essays on Necessity and on the Means of Pleasing were published in 1738. Moncrif was an excellent conversationalist. In his Essays, he only testifies, according to d'Alembert, to "the great use of the world that he had acquired, a use which supposes the knowledge of men, their passions and their faults". No need to deceive oneself about the nature of man: it is advisable to know how to apprehend, and even to use, the faults of others, egoism, self-esteem, propensity to wickedness. To please appears, under its pen, as a categorical imperative, more important than any other. It is enough to want to please in order to put oneself in a position to please. We find here one of the marks of the optimism of the beginning of the century, which does not idealize man but invents the means to be happy despite and with the shortcomings of human nature. The work has two parts: the first deals with the need to please; the second is presented as a mini-treatise on education for children.
