Jacob Israël de Haan - Pijpelijntjes - 1904

The 1904 1st edition of this openly homoerotic novel sparked a riot. The book was dedicated to the Amsterdam physician and writer A. Aletrino, who, much to his dismay, recognized himself in one of the main characters. He took no half measures, bought as many copies as possible and destroyed them. As a result, they are now extremely scarce. Not much less scarce is this second edition, also from 1904, which was completely rewritten by De Haan and in which he had replaced the dedication to Aletrino with a scabrous line from the infringing poem Carmen 16 by Catullus (which, for safety's sake, he had not translated, for the sake of prevention of another riot).
Thanks to the simple, but solid bookbinder's binding, this copy has been very well preserved, unfortunately without the original cover being preserved, but also without any trace of rust in the interior and decorated with a pasted photo of De Haan, apparently cut from a newspaper.
