Rare first edition of "one of the earliest accounts of the sperm-whale industry" [Howes] and one of Herman Melville's sources when writing Moby Dick. "Though Olmsted had dreams of making his name by some notable medical discovery, his greatest achievement was the incidental publication of his definitive journal on whaling” [Hill], now among the rarest of volumes. Olmsted was a passenger on the whale-ship North America, traveling throughout the Pacific, visiting and describing a number of islands and their inhabitants, including the Azores, Cape Horn, Sandwich Islands, Hawaii and Tahiti. He discusses at length the history of whaling, the varieties of whales, methods of attacking and capturing whales, the life of the whaler and the whaling industry as a whole.
