The racing world was waiting with great suspense for the new "mini" Silver Arrows, Mercedes-Benz W165. His debut was scheduled for the Tripolis GP, on the Mellaha racetrack, on May 7, 1939.
Mercedes-Benz had managed to develop and build this new racing car in 6 months. That was all the time they had to adapt to the new rules that only allowed 1.5-liter engines.
Hermann Lang with the starting number 16 and Rudolf Caracciola with the starting number 24, were the favorite drivers and achieved a sensational double victory. Herman Lang became the victor with the starting number 16. Rudolf Caracciola with the second number 24.
